Native American Pictographs: One of the Earliest Forms of Art and Writing
February 9th | 10 to 10:45 AM | Grades 2-8 Presenter: Robin Pease In partnership with Young Audiences of Massachusetts Pictographs use a simple illustration as a symbol for words. Found in Pre Columbian art, Native American art and historical records of ancient Egypt and ancient Mesopotamia, they are considered an art form as well as one of the earliest forms of writing, used before 300 BCE. In this virtual visual arts workshop, students will learn about the use of pictographs in Iroquois culture as a means to preserve history and convey ideas to other nations, and then practice telling their own history and stories using this ancient graphic writing style. Something from Nothing: A History of Hip Hop
January 12th | 10 to 10:45 AM | Grades 4-8 Presenter: Corey DePina In partnership with Young Audiences of Massachusetts From its origins in Latin, African, funk, and soul music, hip hop has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. But did you know that it all started in one neighborhood in the South Bronx? Corey will take students through the early history of hip hop and its four elements – MC-ing, DJ-ing, break dancing and graffiti – to inspire them with the possibilities of creating something positive out of nothing. This workshop features storytelling, rap performance, free-styling demonstration and activities that bring groups together to improvise beats verse or movement, adding in their own style and spin. This program is highly flexible an can be tailored to meet specific learning goals. Música Para Respirar 24/7
November 15th through 19th Música Para Respirar is back! Music programs within Boston Public Schools are excited to partner with La Sociedad Boliviana de Música de Cámara for a week of over 20 virtual field trips across 10 BPS schools. |
In these small-group settings, students will enjoy an interactive mini-concert that will include singing, Q&A, and students can even perform for the visiting musicians! See Música Para Respirar in action in this video!
Música para Respirar 24/7 will be presenting 50-minute concerts for the Boston Public Schools connecting with the 3 following themes:
1. Latinx representation in the classical music genre, specifically band/orchestra/chamber music
2. Social justice: learning how musicians started a grassroots movement for creating a positive impact for people in Bolivia and Latin America
3. Music as a universal language & its application for public health and well-being
La Sociedad Boliviana de Música de Cámara started in 2014 as a grassroots organization and launched Música Para Respirar 24/7 in 2020 to bring the gift of music to those affected by COVID with a focus on people in Latin American countries. During a Música para Respirar 24/7 week, anyone can request a free performance through the organization's social media accounts and within 30 minutes a musician responds to the request and performs a mini concert through Whatsapp or Zoom. Música Para Respirar 24/7 has reached over 14,000 people in 50 countries worldwide, seeking to bring musical performances to those who would otherwise not have access.
The musicians that will be presenting the concerts are in top orchestras and conservatories around the world such as the Teatro Colón, Theatro Municipal de São Paulo, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México, Royal Conservatory of Music, McGill University, among others. Painting the River: The Art of Chinese Writing
November 10th | 10 to 10:45 AM | Grades K-8 Presenter: Shaw Pong Liu In partnership with Young Audiences of Massachusetts In a vivid sonic and visual journey, Shaw Pong invites listeners to draw pictures as she performs Chinese and original music on the violin and erhu. Following each song and creative drawing, Liu shares the visual history of each Chinese character based on the same subject - river, rower, and horse - showing how each character evolved from an ancient drawing over thousands of years. Liu joyfully shares the physical pleasure - and precision - of writing each Chinese character, as students have the chance to try writing Chinese themselves. Listeners will end the journey with a set of their own hand-made drawings and Chinese written characters! Website |
