Late 1st - Early 3rd Grade Active Listening Scaffold
Making Music Listening Purposeful & Accessible
Making Music Listening Purposeful & Accessible
This listening response scaffold is most ideally used to make instrumental listening tasks accessible to late 1st - early 3rd grade students -- Especially when used in a listening journal to keep record of listening tasks.
Often, when students are be asked to simply draw what they imagine we tend to get drawings of instruments that may or may not be in the song or a picture of a stage -- This scaffold allows students to compartmentalize what they're listening to, first by recording important information about the music they're about to hear, then by identifying some familiar instruments in the piece, then by identifying and articulating the overall emotion/tone of the song, then illustrating a scene they imagine would fit the mood created by the music, then finally allowing space for students to elaborate on an opinion on the music they're hearing. This scaffold is best used after significant teacher/whole class-modeling. |
