Procedure:
Provide background context - Ask students what animals usually live on farms, and what sounds they make. Allow each student the opportunity to give an animal or sound. Teach "Old MacDonald" by rote, using a picture book of the traditional song. Allow students to practice the song with a partner or small group after completing the student book, where they should trace and write the name of each animal. Move around the partners/small groups to check that each student is using the appropriate animal names and sounds. *Extension: Read or create a second "Old MacDonald" story with a "surprise ending", such as "E-I-E-I-O", for the students. Ask students to compare and contrast the two stories, and allow them time to come up with their own surprise ending or alternative farm animals using the same "Old MacDonald" song form. |
