Procedure:
Teach the song "A Tisket, A Tasket" to students by rote. Ask students what a letter is (clarify mail vs. ABCs) and what this letter may have been written about. *Optional: Tell a story of someone writing a letter, then losing it to support student understanding of the lyrics - If you have Quaver access, there's a great story included in the PreK curriculum for this song. Ask students to imagine they were writing a letter to a friend or family member - What would the letter include? How would we know who it's to and who it's from? Who takes care of letters for us in the community? Write student ideas for what might be in a friendly letter on the board (drawings for kindergarten, words for 1st/2nd). Model writing a friendly letter using one of the letter templates below. Pass out letter template to students to complete their own friendly letter. *Extension: Students may also complete an "envelope" for their letters. When letters are complete, students may sing and act out the song in small groups, with a partner, and alone. With a partner, one student can act out dropping the letter and the partner can pick it up to put it in their "pocket". |
